California’s hidden civil rights struggle revealed

The UFW abandoned Gerawan farmworkers more than 20 years ago.

But now, as its membership has collapsed, the UFW is back. This time, it wants to impose a new contract that would include taking 3 percent of each employee’s pay, and forcing employers to fire farmworkers who refuse.

That is an unfair labor practice.

The farmworkers opposed this action and gathered enough signatures to hold an historic decertification vote to determine whether or not the UFW should represent them. That vote, supervised by the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board (ALRB), took place on November 5, 2013.

But the ALRB, in cahoots with the UFW, has refused to count the ballots. That is also an unfair labor practice.

Silvia Lopez, one of the workers at Gerawan Farms, has filed a federal lawsuit against members of the ALRB for denying her and other farmworkers’ constitutional rights. is supporting the workers who are fighting to demand the ALRB count their votes and stop denying them their constitutional rights. They are telling the ALRB: Count Our Votes!
